The current energy situation in the world is at a transitional phase towards a cleaner and more sustainable system, since different factors such as climate change, the greenhouse effect, the exhaustion of fossil fuels...could end up causing an energy crisis.
Civil engineering plays a very important part in the transition towards a more sustainable and clean energy system by helping to design, construct and manage infrastructures for generating, distributing and using energy efficiently.
At our School, we are committed to this cause. For example, the research group in Geoenvironmental Engineering (GEG) has different lines of research in the food and agriculture, environmental, energy and bioeconomy sectors, such as resolving problems concerning deep geological storage of highly active radioactive waste (generally spent nuclear fuel).
One example of an engineering project in this field is the Sierra Brava floating solar power plant (Acciona).
